Drawing on paper, 2010
It is always very difficult to start a new work in a new city where you are only passing through. The new place will permeate through the work even if you didn’t intend it to. All you can do is accumulate images, sounds, smells, conversations, encounters… All found and remote in a way, all and none a complete memory.
This work will be presented in the next Mardin Bienali (Turkey). Mardin is a city of passages, with unique architecture called Abbara. I tried to find a live web cam of Mardin but found none, and that was, strangely, very satisfying. There was a distance that would remain so no matter how hard I tried to cheat it.
I decide to concentrate in the word Passage and all its different meanings. So I draw from my collected fragments, from places I have lived in, passed by or maybe only imagined… That way my fragments are an assemblage of passages to or from everywhere and nowhere. It’s not a work about a particular place, but a reflection on the broken narrative that arises from any type of journey, real or fictional.
