‘Uncalibrated Melancholy’ is a series of animations constructed from raw still images from the Cassini spacecraft mission to Saturn. The work is constructed by appropriating the raw data images before they have been cleaned and undergone their final calibration to correspond with human vision. The resulting works have a surreal quality reminiscent of very early cinema and yet they couldn’t be more present-time. The work explores the relation between the power of technology and the self-reflective character of space exploration; confronting the constructions and perceptions of reality with virtuality.
‘Uncalibrated Melancholy’ was commissioned by SCAF (Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum) for the Sheffield Pavilion 2009. The Sheffield Pavilion 09 features the work of Sheffield based artists and it was presented at the 11th Istanbul Biennal 2009. For more info The Sheffield Pavilion 2009

La obra utiliza estas imágenes antes de que sean retocadas y calibradas para corresponder con una visión humana y natural. El resultado tiene una cualidad reminiscente de los comienzos del cine y sin embargo no podría ser más contemporáneo. La obra explora la relación entre el poder de la tecnología y el caracter reflexivo de la exploración espacial; confrontando las construcciones y percepciones de realidad con virtualidad.
